jaag musaafir
Touch on each word to display its meaning
جاگ   مُسافِر
Rise, traveller!
جاگ   رے  …
ساجَن   سُکارے   جائیں گے   اَور   نین   میرے   گے   رو  …
Rise, oh …
My beloved walks joyous, and my eyes have cried …
آہ    بِدْھنا  …
ایسی   رین   کَرو   جا   کِہ   بُھور   کبھو   نَہ   ہو  …
Oh, Creator …
Make such a night that morning doesn't happen …
اُٹھ   جاگ   مُسافِر ،
بُھور   بَھئی
اب   رین   کَہاں   جو   سووت   ہے
Rise up, traveller,
it's daybreak!
Where is the night now, that you are still sleeping?
آہ  …
لَڑَکْپَن   کھیل   میں   کھویا
جوانی   نیند   بھر   سویا
بُڑھاپا   دیکھ   رویا
Ah!
(I) lost childhood in play,
slept the whole youth (in) dream,
(and) seeing old age, wept
اُٹھ   جاگ   مُسافِر ،
بُھور   بَھئی
اب   رین   کَہاں   جو   سووت   ہے
Rise up, traveller,
it's daybreak!
Where is the night now, that you are still sleeping?
ہے ،  اُٹھ   جاگ   رے  …
اب   رین   کَہاں   جو   سووت   ہے
جو   سووت   ہے ،  سو   کھووت   ہے
جو   جگت   ہے ،  سو   پاوت   ہے
Hey, rise up!
Where is the night, that you are still sleeping?
He who is sleeping, is losing
He who is rising, is achieving
اُٹھ   جاگ   مُسافِر ،  بُھور   بَھئی
اب   رین   کَہاں   جو   سووت   ہے
اُٹھ   جاگ   مُسافِر  …
جاگ   رے  …
جاگ  …
Rise up, traveller, it's daybreak!
Where is the night now, that you are still sleeping?
Rise up, traveller, …
Oh, rise …
Rise …

jaag musaafir (Hindi: जाग मुसाफ़िर, Urdu: جاگ مُسافِر) —"Awaken, Traveler"— is a traditional qawwali piece composed by Rohail Hyatt and performed by the legendary ensemble Farid Ayaz & Brothers.

The lyrics are written in Braj Bhasha, a language of Northern India similar to modern Hindustani.

Musically, it blends:

Melodic frameworks of Raga Bhairavi and Desh (featuring microtonal phrases) Rhythmic patterns like the tihai (a phrase repeated thrice) in 14-beat cycles (deepchandi taal)

Rohail Hyatt’s contemporary arrangement:

Layers an electric bassline that converses with the tabla (traditional hand drums) Employs strategic silences and syncopated claps for dramatic tension

Farid Ayaz delivers deep dhrupad-style vocals, while Abu Muhammad:

Counters with soaring taans (melodic flourishes) using sargam (Indian solfège: Sa-Re-Ga-Ma) Executes complex clap patterns in 6/8 (dadra taal)

This Braj Bhasha gem is a Sufi call to spiritual awakening, where Abu Muhammad’s raspy voice embodies the seeker’s longing. The theme of missing the Beloved's arrival by remaining asleep is an archetype in Hindustani poetry. In Sufism, this admonition is intensified: falling asleep not only means missing the encounter with love, but also thwarting one's own spiritual evolution.
