الوِداع

alvidaa
alvidaa
Touch on each word to display its meaning
الوِداع
Goodbye
جانے   کَیسے ،
ٹوٹے   رشتوں   سے
بِکھرے   ہَیں   یہ   پَل ؟
Who knows how,
these moments are sprinkled
with broken relationships ?
مانو   جیسے ،
غم   کی   پلکوں   سے
چھلکے   ہَیں   یہ   پَل ۔
It is as if
these moments were spilled
from eyelashes of sadness.
کیوں   اَدُھوری   یہ   کہانی ؟
کیوں   اَدُھورا   یہ   فسانہ ؟
کیوں   لکیروں   میں   اِس کے
الوِداع ؟
Why is this tale incomplete?
Why is this romance incomplete?
Why, within its boundaries, is there
a goodbye?
عُمْر   بھر   کا   ساتھ   دے   جو ،
کیوں   وہ   ہی   پیار   ہو ؟
کیوں   نَہ   مِٹ   کے   جو   فنا   ہو ،
وہ   بھی   پیار   ہو ؟
Company that is given lifelong.
why only that would be love?
Why isn't also love,
that which is erased and departed?
نَہ   اَدُھوری   یہ   کہانی ،
نَہ   اَدُھورا   یہ   فسانہ ۔
مر   کے   بھی   نَہ   ہَم   کہیں گے
الوِداع ۔
This tale is not incomplete.
This romance is not incomplete.
Even after dying, we won't say
goodbye.
بیرییا   میرے   ربّا ،
کیوں   ہوا   میرے   ربّا ؟
یوں   نَہ   [ dhaaviiN ]،
یوں   نَہ   [ dhaaviiN ]،
دو   دلاں   دی   یہ   کہانی ۔
Oh my God,
why have you become my enemy?
Do not demolish like this,
do not demolish like this
this story of two hearts.
مِٹ   بھی   جاؤں ،  نَہ   مِٹے ،
یہ   کیسی   پیاس   ہے ؟
دُوریوں   میں   کھو   کے   بھی
تُو   میرے   پاس   ہے ۔
Which thirst is this,
that doesn't leave when I do?
You are lost in the distance,
but still close to me
کِیُون٘کِہ   تُو   میری   کہانی ،
کِیُون٘کِہ   تُو   میرا   فسانہ ۔
اب   کَبھی   پِھر   نَہ   ہے   کہنا
الوِداع ۔
Because you are my tale,
because you are my romance.
Now, we don't have to say
goodbye again.
تیری   یادوں   کو   سَہْلاتا   ہوُں  ؍
نَہ   کہنا
پَل   میں   بَن   کے
بِکھرتا   ہوُں  ؍
 [ hums ]
جِس   جہاں   میں
کھو   گئی   ہو   تُم  ؍
الوِداع
کْیا   نَہِیں   ہے   وہاں
ٹوٹی   تنہائیوں   کا   غم ؟
I caress your memories /
don't say
One moment I am composed,
then ruined /
[hums]
This world in which,
you became lost /
goodbye
Is there no
sorrow of broken solitudes?
بیرییا   میرے   ربّا ،
کیوں   ہوا   میرے   ربّا ؟
یوں   نَہ   [ dhaaviiN ]،
یوں   نَہ   [ dhaaviiN ]،
دو   دلاں   دی   یہ   کہانی ۔
Oh my God,
why have you become my enemy?
Do not demolish like this,
do not demolish like this
this story of two hearts.
جانے   کَیسے ،
ٹوٹے   رشتوں   سے
بِکھرے   ہَیں   یہ   پَل  ؍  نَہ   کہنا
مانو   جیسے
غم   کی   پلکوں   سے
چھلکے   ہَیں   یہ   پَل  ؍  الوِداع
Who knows why,
these moments are sprinkled
with broken relationships ? / don't say
It is as if
these moments were spilled
from eyelashes of sadness. / goodbye
کیوں   اَدُھوری   یہ   کہانی ؟ ؍  [ hums ]
 [ hums ] …  الوِداع  …
Why is this tale incomplete? / [hums]
[hums] … goodbye …

alvidaa (Hindi: अलविदा, Urdu: الوِداع) "Goodbye", is a song written by Indian lyricist and screenwriter Niranjan Iyengar.

It was featured in the 2013 Indian spy thriller "D-day". The music was created by the composer trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (also known as SEL).

In the movie, it is played under tragic circumstances, while an Indian spy (played by actor Arjun Rampal), reminisces his love relationship with a Pakistani prostitute (played by Shruti Haasan).

The song is almost completely written in standard Hindustani, except for some pseudo-Punjabi words in the chorus, added for effect.

For example, the word dhaaviiN is not a real Hindustani word, but a Punjabi-sounding verb in imperative meaning "to pull down, to demolish".

yuuN na dhaaviiN, yuuN na dhaaviiN, do dilaaN dii yah kahaanii Do not demolish, do not demolish in such a way

this story of two hearts.

(Similarly, dilaaN and dii are also Punjabi)

The actual movie scenes used as trailer are a little truculent, so I posted another Youtube video showing a static image with lyrics.

The singers are Nikhil D'Souza, Sukhwinder Singh, Shruti Haasan herself, and Loy Mendonsa.
