raat bhar kaa hai mahmaan aNdheraa

raat bhar kaa hai mahmaan aNdheraa
Touch on each word to display its meaning
raat   bhar   kaa   hai   mɛhmaan   andheraa
Darkness is a Guest Just for the Night
maut   kabhii   bhii   mil   saktii   hai
lekin   jiivan   kal   na   milegaa
marne   vaale   soch   samajh   le ,
phir   tujhe   ye   pal   na   milegaa
Death can be met anytime
but life won't be found the next day
Oh, dying one, reflect upon this,
afterwards, this moment won't find you!
raat   bhar   kaa   hai   mɛhmaan   andheraa
kis   ke   roke   rukaa   hai   saveraa
 [ both lines x2 ]
raat   bhar   kaa   hai   mɛhmaan   andheraa  …
Darkness is a guest for as long as the night
Who can hold back daybreak?
[both lines x2]
Darkness is a guest just for the night …
raat   jitnii   bhii   saNgiin   hogii
subaH   utnii   hii   rangiin   hogii
 [ both lines x2 ]
As severe as the night would have been
the morning will be just as that much vibrant
[both lines x2]
Gam   na   kar   gar   hai   baadal   ghaneraa
kis   ke   roke   rukaa   hai   saveraa
raat   bhar   kaa   hai   mɛhmaan   andheraa  …
Don't grieve if the the cloud is dense
Who can hold back daybreak?
Darkness is a guest just for the night …
lab   pe   shikvaa   na   laa   ashk   pii   le
jis   taraH   bhii   ho   kuchh   der   jii   le
 [ both lines x2 ]
Don't bring lamentation on the lips, swallow (your) tears!
Live, even whichever way, for a little while
[both lines x2]
ab   ukhRne   ko   hai   Gam   kaa   Deraa
kis   ke   roke   rukaa   hai   saveraa
raat   bhar   kaa   hai   mɛhmaan   andheraa  …
Now sorrow is about to strike camp
Who can hold back daybreak?
Darkness is a guest for as long as the night …
aa   koii   mil   ke   tadbiir   socheN
sukh   ke   sapnoN   kii   taabiir   socheN
 [ both lines x2 ]
Come, let's get together and think some plan
Let's interpret dreams of happiness
[both lines x2]
jo   teraa   hai   vo   hii   Gam   hai   meraa
kis   ke   roke   rukaa   hai   saveraa
raat   bhar   kaa   hai   mɛhmaan   andheraa  …
The sorrow you have is just (the same as) mine
Who can hold back daybreak?
Darkness is a guest just for the night …

raat bhar kaa hai mahmaan aNdheraa (Hindi: रात भर का है महमान अँधेरा, Urdu: رات بھر کا ہے مِہمان اندھیرا) "Darkness is a Guest for as Long as the Night", is a song from the 1958 Bollywood film "Sone Ki Chidiya".

The song is interpreted while the female protagonist, an indomitable singer called Lakshmi (Nutan), facing a dark and stormy night, hears the singing of Amar (Talat Mahmood), a journalist who is attracted to her.

The song speaks about how one should seize the moment and not lose heart even in the darkest of times.

The song's lyrics were written by the Urdu poet Sahir Ludhianvi, and the music was composed by O.P. Nayyar.

Although Talat Mahmood was a fine singer himself, in this case he was just picturizing the song. The actual playback singer was Mohammed Rafi.
