laal ishq
Touch on each word to display its meaning
dil kii rag rag se Tapkaa huaa hai lahuu [ x2 ]
jaa-ba-jaa , juu-ba-juu , jaa-ba-jaa , juu-ba-juu [ x2 ]
chaal dekho to mastii bharii chaal hai [ x2 ]
From every vein of the heart, blood has been spilled [x2]
everywhere, in every place [x2]
If you look at my walk, it's a walk full of drunkenness [x2]
Haal dekho to bas Haal beHaal hai
ishq to laal hai [ x4 ]
dil kii rag rag se Tapkaa huaa hai lahuu [ x2 ]
If you look at my state, it's a calamitous state
For true love is red! [x4]
From every vein of the heart, blood has been spilled [x2]
kaun haiN log ye zaxm khaae hue ?
dil kii maiyat ko sar pe uThaae hue ?
aarzuueN kahaaN bech kar aae haiN ?
aaj aae haiN , puuchho ye kyaa laae haiN
ik moHabbat se ye na sambhaale gae
ik moHabbatt na in se sambhaalii gaii
Who are those people who have suffered wounds,
who have raised the corpse of the heart upon their heads?
Where have they gone after selling their longings?
Today they have returned, ask what they have brought.
Neither have they been withstood by a single love
nor has a single love been withstood by them.
zindagii bas ummiidoN bharii jeb thii [ x2 ]
jaise xaalii milii , vaise xaalii gaii
Life was just a pocket full of hopes [x2]
empty as it came, empty it went
kyaa milaa hai moHabbat ke baazaar se [ x2 ]
aaj phirte ho dil ko naqad haar ke
ye moHabbatt bhii dushman kii ek chaal hai
ishq to laal hai [ x4 ]
dil kii rag rag se Tapkaa huaa hai lahuu [ x2 ]
What has been gained from the marketplace of love? [x2]
Today you wander with money, having lost your heart
This love too is a move by the enemy
True love is red [x4]
From every vein of the heart, blood has dripped [x2]
jab kahaa thaa , " moHabbatt gunaah to nahiiN "
phir gunaah ke baraabar sazaa kyuuN milii ?
When did I say: "Love is not a sin?"
Why did I receive a punishment equal to sin?
zaxm dete ho , kɛhte ho , " siite raho "
jaan le kar kahoge ki jiite raho
pyaar jab-jab zamiin par utaaraa gayaa
zindagii , tujh ko sadqe meN vaaraa gayaa
You give me wounds and say: "Keep sewing them shut"
After taking my life, you'll say: "Keep living"
Every time love was brought down to the earth
life, I offered it to you as a sacrifice
pyaar zindaa rahaa maqtloN meN , magar [ x2 ]
pyaar jis ne kiyaa hai vo maaraa gayaa
Love stayed alive on the scaffold, but [x2]
the one who loved, was executed
Had yahii hai to Had se guzar jaaeNge [ x2 ]
ishq chaahegaa , chup-chaap mar jaaeNge
ye moHabbat meN niklii huii faal hai
ishq to laal hai [ x4 ]
dil kii rag rag se Tapkaa huaa hai lahuu [ x2 ]
If this is the limit, we'll cross the limit [x2]
If true love so wishes, we'll die in silence
This is an omen obtained in (earthly) love:
For true love is red! [x4]
From every vein of the heart, blood has been spilled [x2]

Laal Ishq (Hindi: लाल इश्क़, Urdu: لال عِشْق) was created as a theme song for a 2017 Pakistani television drama of the same name, written by Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar and originally sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. In 2024, a new version with beautifully recited parts was sung by the Indian female singer Aditi Singh Sharma.
The song uses three different words to refer to the concept of "love": pyaar, of Sanskrit origin — the most general term —; mohabbat, of Arabic origin, which can also mean "affection" or "earthly, human love"; and ishq, also of Arabic origin but widely used in Persian for the ideal of passionate, all-consuming romantic love. Throughout the song, the lyrics describe characteristics of earthly love (mohabbat), only to emphasize that true romantic love (ishq) is red — bleeding in nature, a love that wounds and consumes the lover.
This song is not to be mistaken with another one, also called Laal Ishq, featured in the 2013 Bollywood film "Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela", and performed by Arijit Singh.
