guloN meN rang
Touch on each word to display its meaning
guloN meN rang bhare baad-e-naubahaar chale [ x2 ]
chale bhii aao ki gulshan kaa kaarobaar chale
[ both verses x2 ]
Let the early spring breeze blow, filling color in the flowers [x2]
Let it keep coming at once, so that garden matters flourish
[both verses x2]
qafas udaas hai yaaro
sabaa se kuchh to kaho
qafas udaas hai
qafas udaas hai yaaro
sabaa se kuchh to kaho
kahiiN to bahar-e-xudaa
aaj zikr-e-yaar chale
[ last 2 verses x2 ]
Prison is solitary, friends,
say something to the morning breeze!
Prison is solitary.
Prison is solitary, friends,
say something to the morning breeze!
Perchance, for God's sake,
the remembrance of my beloved starts today.
[last 2 verses x2]
chale bhii aao ki gulshan kaa kaarobaar chale
guloN meN rang bhare baad-e-naubahaar chale
Let it keep coming at once, so that garden matters flourish
Let the early spring breeze blow, filling color in the flowers
jo ham pe guzrii so guzrii
magar shab-e-hijraaN
[ both verses x2 ]
jo ham pe guzrii …
guzrii … [ x3 ]
jo ham pe guzrii so guzrii
magar shab-e-hijraaN
What happened to us, happened
but in the night of (our) separation …
[both verses x2]
What happened to us …
happened … [x3]
What happened to us, happened
but in the night of (our) separation …
hamaare ashk terii aaqibat saṁvaar chale [ x2 ]
chale bhii aao ki gulshan kaa kaarobaar chale
guloN meN rang bhare baad-e-naubahaar chale
… our tears brought your pardon in the end [x2]
Let it keep coming at once, so that garden matters flourish
Let the early spring breeze blow, filling color in the flowers

guloN meN rang (Hindi: गुलों में रंग, Urdu: گُلوں میں رنگ): “Color in the Flowers”, also called “Gulon Main Rang Bare”: “Filling the Color in the Flowers” or “Filling the Flowers with Color”, is a very famous ghazal (poem) written by the celebrated Urdu poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz.
This ghazal became enormously popular after the interpretation of the Indo-Pakistani singer Mehdi Hasan, also known as “the King of Ghazals”.
The poem was composed while Faiz was imprisoned because of his political activism; therefore, the “cage” mentioned in the poem can be interpreted literally.
This ghazal was musicalized many times by different composers, and it was interpreted by many famous artists in addition to Mehdi Hassan. It also became part of the soundtrack of many movies.
Among the most famous recent interpreters are Ali Sethi (the singer in this video clip) and Arijit Singh.
This musical arrangement made for Ali Sethi at Coke Studio departs a little from the traditional interpretation of ghazals, by using a shorter beat and a predictable melody, making it more likable to a Western audience not necessarily familiar with ghazals.
