ghuum taanaa (Hindi:घूम ताना, Urdu: گھوم-تانا ) is a song featured in 2017 at season 10 of the Pakistani musical TV show Coke Studio.
The phrase ghuum taanaa can be roughly translated as "spin the warp", "spin the weave", etc. It has mystical connotations related to the spinning of the world, the thread of fate, the chakra wheel, or a general sense of wandering.
It is a very common phrase in South Asian compositions (especially those of Sufi inspiration) so it might evoke as well the whirling dance style of the Sufis'.
However, the phrase is most likely used as a generic musical beat, rather than for any specific meaning of its words.
The song was originally part of the 2004 album "Dewaar", by the Sufi-rock band Pakistani Junoon.
The song was written and composed by Salman Ahmad, Junoon's founder. He claims it to be a semi-autobiographical song, related to his family's migration from Patiala to Lahore (from modern-day India to Pakistan respectively). The lyrics were written in collaboration with Sabir Zafar.
In the Coke Studio feature presentation of this song, the singers were Momina Mustehsan along with the all-female, a capella group Irteassh, and Coke Studio's in-house vocalists).
