channaa mereyaa (Gurmukhi: ਚੰਨਾ ਮੇਰਿਆ, Shahmukhi and Urdu: چنّا میریا, Hindi: चन्ना मेरेया) is a song from the 2016 Indian romantic movie drama Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (Oh, heart, it is difficult!).
The title of the song is in Punjabi, and it consists of 2 words:
channaa, vocative of chan, "moon"
meriyaa, vocative of meraa, "my, mine"
The vocative is a case used in inflected languages such as Punjabi for addressing or appealing to others, therefore the title means "Oh, My Moon!"
This song talks about the sense of renouncement and resignation to unrequited love.
In the movie, the song is played on occasions where the main male protagonist, a singer called Ayan (interpreted by the Indian actor Ranbir Kapoor) claims to give up his love for the female protagonist, Alizeh (played by the Indian actress Anushka Sharma).
