maulaa mere le le merii jaan (Hindi: मौला मेरे ले ले मेरी जान, Urdu: مولا میرے لے لے میری جان) "My Lord, Take My Life!", is a song played in the 2007 Bollywood film "Chak De! India".
The title could also be translated as "My Lord, my life is yours to take!", or "I surrender my life to you".
The film tells the story of Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan), the captain of India's hockey team, who falls into disgrace and ends up fulfilling the undesirable position of coaching the female national hockey team.
As the character is a Muslim and in the movie he is portayed as somewhat of a traitor for having erred a penalty goal agains the arch-enemy Pakistani team, much of the lyrics remark how his life experience is the same as that of his fellow Indians.
To some degree, the lyrics address God and country as the same.
The "third color" mentioned by the lyrics refers to the (unofficial) interpretation of the colors in India's flag: 3 vertical stripes in the colors saffron, white, and green. The saffron stripe is said to represent the Hindus, and the third or lower green color, the Muslims.
Other cultural references are:
"Diwali" and "Holi", two of the most important Hindu festivities "Sawan": (the classical Indian month associated with the beginning of the rainy season) "Heer and Ranjha": a very famous Punjabi tragic love epic "ghee" (clarified butter), "churi" (a sweet desert made with crumbled bread), "khir" (rice pudding) , and "sevayaan" (vermicelli) ar all typical dishes
The lyrics were written by Jaideep Sahni, who was also the movie's screenwriter.
The music was composed by the duo Salim-Sulaiman, and the playback singers were Salim Merchant (also from Salim-Sulaiman), and Krishna Beura.
