Touch on each word to display its meaning
बदतमीज़   दिल
Mannerless Heart
पान   में   पुदीना   देखा ,
नाक   का   नगीना   देखा
चिकनी   चमेली   देखा ,
चिकना   कमीना   देखा
चाँद   ने   [ cheater ]  हो   के   [ cheat ]  किया   तो
सारे   तारे   बोले   [ gili gili akhaa ]
I saw mint in the betel leaf
I saw the gem of the nose (stud)
I saw a smooth jasmine
I saw a smooth wicked one
The moon became a cheater and cheated,
so all the stars said: "gili gili akhaa"
मेरी   बात ,  तेरी   बात ,  ज़्यादा   बातें   बुरी   बात
थाली   में   कटोरा   ले   के ,  आलू   भात ,  [ murī ]  भात
मेरे   पीछे   किसी   ने   [ repeat ]  किया   तो
साला   मैं   ने   तेरे   मुंह   पे   मारा   मुक्का
My talk, your talk, many words are a bad thing,
Having taken a bowl in a platter, potato-rice, muri-rice,
If anyone repeated after me then
darn, I would have punched you in the face!
इस   पे   भूत   कोई   चढ़ा   है ,
ठहरना   जाने   न
अब   तो   क्या   बुरा   क्या   भला   है
फ़र्क़   पहचाने   न
ज़िद   पकड़   के   खड़ा   है   कंबख़्त
छोड़ना   जाने   न
Some spirit has risen over it,
doesn't know how to stop
Now it doesn't recognize the difference
between what is good, what is bad.
Holding to stubbornness, the unfortunate is moored,
doesn't know how to let go
बदतमीज़   दिल   [ x3 ]
माने   न   [ x2 ]
 [ both verses x2 ]
Mannerless heart [x3]
it doesn't heed [x2]
[both verses x2]
यह   जो   हाल   है ,  सवाल   है ,  कमाल   है
जाने   न  …  जाने   न  …
बदतमीज़   दिल   [ x3 ]
माने   न  …
This a condition that is a conundrum, that is fantastic
It doesn't know, it doesn't know
Mannerless heart [x3]
it doesn't heed
हवा   में   [ Havanna ]  देखा ,
ढमका-फ़ुलाना   देखा
सिंह   का   सिंघाड़ा   खा   के ,
शेर   का   गुर्राना   देखा
पूरी   दुनिया   का   गोल   गोल   चक्कर   ले   के
मैं   ने   दुनिया   को   मारा   धक्का
I've seen Havana from the air
I've seen this and that
After eating the singhada of a lion
I saw the lion roar
After touring the whole round, round world,
I pushed the world
 [ Hey , Bollywood , Hollywood , very very jolly-good ]
राई   के   पहाड़   पर   तीन   [ foot ]  [ Liliput ]
मेरे   पीछे   किसी   ने   [ repeat ]  किया   तो
साला   मैं   ने   तेरे   मुंह   पे   मारा   मुक्का
[Hey, Bollywood, Hollywood, very very jolly-good]
On a mountain of mustard seeds, I saw 3-foot Lilliput
If anyone repeats after me then
I'll punch that rascal in the face
अय्याशी   के   [ one-way ]  से   ख़ुद   को
मोड़ना   जाने   न ,
कंबल   बेवजह   शर्म   का
ओढ़ना   जाने   न
ज़िद   पकड़   के   खड़ा   है   कंबख़्त
छोड़ना   जाने   न
It doesn't know how to turn itself away
from one-way luxuriousness
because it doesn't know how to cover himself
with a causeless blanket of shame
Holding to stubbornness, the unfortunate is moored,
doesn't know how to let go
बदतमीज़   दिल   [ x3 ]
माने   न   [ x2 ]
बदतमीज़   दिल   [ x3 ]

Mannerless heart [x3]
it doesn't heed
आज   सारे ,  चाँद   तारे
बन   गए   हैं   [ disco lights ]
जल   के ,  बुझा   के   हमको   बुला   के
कह   रहे   हैं :  [ Party all night ! ]
Today all, the moon, the stars,
have become disco lights
after burning, being extinguished, and calling to us,
they were saying: Party all night!
नाता   बेतुकी   दिल्लगी   से ,
तोड़ना   जाने   न
आनेवाले   कल   की   फ़िक्र   से ,
जुड़ना   जाने   न
ज़िद   पकड़   के   खड़ा   है   कंबख़्त
छोड़ना   जाने   न   [ ha ha ]
It doesn't know how to break
the relationship with pointless inclinations
It doesn't know how to attach itself
with the worries of tomorrow
Holding to stubbornness, the unfortunate is moored,
doesn't let go, ha ha

[all stanza x2]
यह   जो   हाल   है ,  सवाल   है ,  कमाल   है
जाने   न ,  जाने   न
This a condition that is a conundrum, that is fantastic
It doesn't know, it doesn't know
बदतमीज़   दिल   [ x3 ]

Mannerless heart [x3]

badtamiiz dil (Hindi: बदतमीज़ दिल, Urdu: بدتمیز دِل) "Mannerless Heart" is a song from the 2013 Indian romantic drama "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani".

The song and video clip happen in the setting of a wedding party, where 4 long time friends get reacquainted after several years.

One of the friends is the party entertainer and male protagonist, Kabir "Bunny" Thapar (played by the Indian actor Ranbir Kapoor).

The couple being married are his lifetime friends Aditi and Taran (played by Kalki Koechlin and Kunaal Roy Kapoor respectively).

Also attending the party is the fourth friend and female protagonist, Naina Talwar (played by the Indian actress Deepika Padukone). Naina and Bunny had been in love years ago, but life took them to different paths afterwards.

The party grows inceasily reckless as the song progresses, and during it, Naina and Bunny reignite their love.

The lyrics talk about a heart that can't control itself. A big part of the lyrics, especially at the beginning, is just gibberish, a collection of phrases put together in rapid succession just to provide a quick, high-energy start. (This was admitted by the lyricist himself, Amitabh Bhattacharya).

Some of the phrases used are:

gili gili akhaa this could be translated as "wet, wet eyes", but it probably means nothing. It has been included as a tribute to a very famous 1972 song interpreted by Kishore Kumar also called "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" (This Youth is Crazy), like this film's title.

Dhamkaa-fulaanaa is an expression meaning "this and that, so and so, trivial, miscellaneous, unimportant things". In the song is quickly pronounced as something like Dhimkaa-falaanaa. The second word should be pronounced carefully because fulaanaa means an undetermined person or thing, but falaanaah means "penis" in Urdu. It can also be fulaanaa-Dhamkaa, and the spelling falaaNRaa is valid in Punjabi. "siNh kaa siNghaaṛaa khaa ke" means "after eating the singhada of a lion" (the singhada is a species of aquatic edible plant also called "water caltrop"). Here the author is just playing with the similar sounds of "siNh" (lion) and siṁghaaRaa (the singhada plant). raaii ke pahaaR par tiin [foot] [Liliput] means "a 3-footed Lilliputian over a hill of mustard seeds". Mustard seeds are known for being small, and "Lilliput" refers to the mythical land populated by diminutive individuals, described in the tale "Gulliver's Travels", by the Anglo-Irish writer Jonathan Swift chiknii chamelii and ciknaa kamiinaa are "a smooth (or oily, or polished) jasmine" and "a smooth wicked one", respectively, but it might simply refer to a woman and a man. aaluu bhaat, [murii] bhaat mean potato-rice and "muri" (Bengali typical puffed platter) rice.

The wedding scene was filmed a the Overoi Udaivillas luxury hotel in Rajastan, India.

The playback singers are Benny Dayal for the male parts, and Shefali Alvares for the female parts.

The music was composed by Pritam, and the lyrics, as mentioned, were written by the Indian lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya).
