Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (Hindi: झूम बराबर झूम, Urdu: جھوم برابر جھوم) "Sway Ceaselessly!", is a song from a 2007 Indian romantic comedy film of the same name.
The lyrics are in Hindustani, with some Punjabi words inserted, and they were written by the Indian poet Gulzar (Sampooran Singh Kalra), whose work is mainly in these two languages.
The music was composed by the trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy or "SEL".

The video clip depicts two couples competing in what seems to be a dance contest, dressed in traditional clothes and performing dance moves that are a fusion of modern and Indian traditional dance.
. While they dance, they challenge and slightly hinder each other in a comical way.

The 2 couples are the movie protagonists, who in the movie undergo some complicated love quadrangle. On one side, there are Steve and Alvira (played by Bobby Deol and Preity Zinta), and on the other side, there are Ricky and Laila (played by Abishek Bachchan and Lara Dutta). In the movie, they all develop feelings for the exact opposite dance partner.

By the end of the dance, a mysterious gypsy-like performer joins the dancing and the singing, and closes the act. This person is played by Amitabh Bachchan, a famous multifaceted Indian actor, father of Abhishek, who makes cameo appearances during the film.

The songs' title is sometimes translated as "Dance Ceaselessly", although"jhūm" is nor exactly "dancing" but "swaying, rocking in an undulating motion". It is a typical phrase used to encourage people to dance.

The song contains some Punjabi expressions, added for ambiance:
  • vich: is a Punjabi word (postposition) meaning "in, within".
  • : a typical Punjabi interjection, used as vocative mark: Oh! O!
  • makhaṇa: is an endearing term used for a beloved one, it probably relates to butter, and to the softness, tenderness of ones' dear. Here it is translated as "my sweetie".
  • billō nī: "ni" is a common Punjabi interjection used only to address a female (hey! oh!), and "billo" is another endearing term; it probably means something like "kitty", "she-cat", and it is especially used with women having cat-like (atypically clear) eye colors. Here it is translated as "my kitty".
At some point in the song, also some typically Urdu expression is used:
  • bā-adab hō bā-mulāhizā: this is part of a larger formula used in old times, by a royal announcer, when a king was entering a room, it means something like "be attentive and respectful!". In the song, it is used ironically announcing one's heart "entering into" the beloved's attention.

The whole song conveys an atmosphere of dreamy (drug) smoking.
The lyrics say "cilam caṭāī bāṭēṁgē", which means "let’s share the chilam and the mats". The chilam is a smoking clay pipe, or, more precisely, the upper vessel of a hookah, where tobacco or the smoking substance is placed and burnt.
Also, the lyrics talk about shaking off the smoke, "grinding" the moon, and a general melting, slippery feeling. Y
"Turning on the oven" and "lighting the lamp" are also obvious refereces at igniting the hookah or pipe.

The "gur" mentioned in the song, which is compared to the sweetness of the beloved's lips, is a piece of unrefined sugar coming from the first press of the sugarcane or the palm. It is typical in the Indian subcontinent.

The playback singers are Krishnakumar Kunnath (also known as KK), Sukhwinder Singh, and Shankar Mahadevan for the male voices, and Mahalaxmi Iyer for the female voice.
