Zaroori Tha

zarūrī thā
It was necessary
00 :02
lafz kitnē  tērē pairōṁ
lipṭē hōṁgē
tūnē jab āxirī xat
mērā jalāyā hōgā
How many words
would have clung to your feet
when you (would have) burned
my last letter
00 :31
tūnē jab phūl kitābōṁ
nikālē hōṁgē
dēnē vālā bhī tujhē
yād  āyā hōgā
When you took the flowers
out of the books,
you must have remembered
the giver
01 :17
tērī ām̐khōṁ  dariyā
utrnā bhī zarūrī thā
mōhbbat bhī zarūrī thī
bichṛnā bhī zarūrī thā
It was also necessary
for the waters of your eyes to flow
Love was also necessary
To be separated was also necessary
01 :34
zarūrī thā ki ham dōnōṁ
tavāf ārzū kartē,
magar phir ārzūōṁ
bikhrnā bhī zarūrī thā
tērī ām̐khōṁ  dariyā
utrnā bhī zarūrī thā
It was necessary for us both
to go around our desire,
but it was also necessary for our desires
to afterwards be spoiled
[repeats chorus]
[instrumental bridge]
02 :24
batāō yād hai tum
vah jab dil  curāyā thā
curāī cīz  tum
xudā  ghar banāyā thā
Tell me you remember
when you have stolen this heart.
That stolen item, you
had made it the house of God
02 :41
 jab kahtē thē mērā nām
tum tasbīh mēṁ paṛhtē ,
mōhbbat  namāzōṁ
qazā karnē  ḍartē
And when you used to say that
you recited my name in tasbih,
that you were afraid of missing
the prayers of love
02 :58
magar ab yād ātā hai
 bātēṁ thīṁ mahaz bātēṁ
kahīṁ bātōṁ  bātōṁ mēṁ
mukrnā bhī zarūrī thā
tērī ām̐khōṁ  dariyā
utrnā bhī zarūrī thā
But now I remember that
those were words, mere words.
It was also necessary to go back
on words said, just words
It was also necessary
for the waters of your eyes to flow
03 :48
vahī haiṁ sūrtēṁ apnī,
vahī maiṁ hūm̐, vahī tum ,
magar khōyā huā hūm̐ maiṁ
magar tum bhī kahīṁ gum
Our appearances are the same,
I am the same, you are the same,
but I have become lost,
but you also are lost somewhere
04 :05
mōhbbat mēṁ daġā
thī  kāfir thē  kāfir haiṁ
milī haiṁ maṁzilēṁ phir bhī,
musāfir thē musāfir haiṁ
In love, I have been treacherous
so we were infidels, so we are infidels.
(Our) destinations were met, but still,
we were travellers, we are travellers
04 :22
tērē dil  nikālē ham
kahām̐ bhaṭkē kahām̐ pahum̐cē
magar bhaṭkē  yād āyā
bhaṭknā bhī zarūrī thā
mōhbbat bhī zarūrī thī
bichṛnā bhī zarūrī thā
Dismissed from your heart, I
wandered here, arrived there …
But then, wandering, I remembered
(that) wandering was also necessary,
(that) love was also necessary,
(that) separating was also necessary
04 :47
zarūrī thā ki ham dōnōṁ
tavāf ārzū kartē,
magar phir ārzūōṁ
bikhrnā bhī zarūrī thā
tērī ām̐khōṁ  dariyā
utrnā bhī zarūrī thā
It was necessary for us both
to go around our desire,
but it was also necessary for our desires
to afterwards be spoiled.
It was also necessary
for the waters of your eyes to flow
Zaroori Tha (Urdu: ضروری تھا, Hindi: ज़रूरी था) "It was necessary" is a song written by the Pakistani lyricist and playwright Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar, and it was released as part of the album "Back 2 Love", by the famous qawwali singer Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.

The song could be classified as "qawwali pop"; it tells about two lovers whose relationship underwent critical moments, but whose suffering "was necessary" for their love to reach maturity.

The lyrics use religious vocabulary (especially Muslim) to describe their love relationship.

The video is not a movie trailer but a video clip made specifically for this song, and the characters are the Indian actors and ex-models Gauhar Khan and Kushal Tandon. This couple had shortly before participated in the very famous Indian reality TV show "Big Boss". The video clip quickly broke several audience records on Youtube.

The album "Back 2 Love" was released in 2014, and the song was later used in the 2015 Indian romantic drama film "Hamari Adhuri Kahani" (Our Incomplete Story).
