Matwala Jiya Dole Piya (Hindi: मतवाला जिया डोले पिया, Urdu: مَتوالا جيا ڈولے پِیا) is a song from the 1957 iconic Indian film "Mother India".

The song's lyrics were composed by Shakeel Badayuni, and the music was composed by the famous Bollywood music director Naushad.

In the movie, the song is sung by the main characters, Radha (played by the actress Nargis), the movie's heroine, and his husband Shamu (played by the actor Raaj Kumar). A family friend, Shambu (played by the actor Muqri) sings along and provides a comic counterpoint.

The word "sawan" used in the following verses
sāvan hai javānī pē lagī / dil kī bulā lē It is Sawan on youth / the heart's craving calls

refers to the traditional Indian month of Sawan, which happens at the beginning of the rainy season, and is associated with romantic feelings.

In the same sense, the rainclouds and overcast mentioned in the verse:
jhūmē ghaṭā chāē rē bādal masses of rainclouds gather, clouds are covering (the sky)

have always a positive connotation in Hindustani poetry.

The singers are Lata Mangeshkar for the female parts, and Mohhamed Rafi for the male parts.
Both are legendary singers, and they contributed to many movies along with the duo formed by the lyricist-composer duo formed by Shakeel Badayuni and Naushad.
