Gulon Main Rang (Hindi: गुलों में रंग, Urdu: گُلوں میں رنگ): “Color in the Flowers”, also called “Gulon Main Rang Bare”: “Filling the Color in the Flowers” or “Filling the Flowers with Color”, is a very famous ghazal (poem) written by the celebrayed Pakistani poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz.

This ghazal became enormously popular after the interpretation of the Indo-Pakistani singer Mehdi Hassan, also known as “the King of Ghazals”.

The poem was composed while Faiz was imprisoned because his political activism; therefore, the “cage” mentioned in the poem can be interpreted literally.

This ghazal was musicalized many times by different composers, and it was interpreted by many famous artists in addition to Mehdi Hassan. It also became part of the soundtrack of many movies. Among the most famous recent interpreters are Ali Sethi (the singer shown in the video clip) and Arijit Singh.

This musical arrangement made for Ali Sethi at Coke Studio departs a little from the traditional interpretation of ghazals, by using a shorter beat and a predictable melody, making it more likable to a Western audience not necessarily familiar with ghazals.
