Chaiyya, Chaiyya (Hindi: छैय्याँ छैय्याँ, Urdu: چَیّاں چَیّاں) "in the shade", is a song from the 1988 Hindi film "Dil Se".

The song's lyrics were written by Gulzar, and the music was composed by A.R.Rahman, both iconic Bollywood contributors.
The singers are Sapna Awasthi for the female parts, and Sukhwinder Singh for the male parts.

The movie and this song in particular revolve around the subject of "shadows" or "shade".

The word "chaiyyām̐" is unusual, and probably is a locative (a word case indicating location) or the more common."chāyā" (shade).

The song was clearly inspired by a Punjabi folk song called "Thaiyya Thaiyya" which has the lyrics of a qalam written by the Sufi poet and saint Bulleh Shah.

The song includes several Muslim devotional words, and images, such as āyat, which means word, speech, or proof, but also means a sentence in the Quran or some other sacred book, or the stopping sign added to the end of such revelations.

The video clip contains movie scenes showing the movie protagonist Amar (played by Shah Rukh Khan) and the dancer Malaika Arora joining him in an item song. They dance on top of a moving train that traverses beautiful, shady landscapes.

The song became very popular, surpassing the movie itself and remaining in the Indian collective memory to this day.
