एक तरफ़ प्यार है, चाहत है, वफ़ा-दारी है
एक तरफ़ देश में  देश में
एक तरफ़ देश में धोखा है, ग़द्दारी है
बस्तियाँ सहमी हुई, सहमा चमन सारा है
ग़म में क्यूँ डूबा हुआ आज सब नज़ारा है

One one side there is love, affection, loyalty
on the side, in the country … in the country …
on the other side in the country there is deception, dishonesty
The populations are frightened, all the garden is frightened
Why is every look is submerged in sorrow today?
If the clouds will rain fire instead of water
all verdant fields will be scorched,
will be, will be (scorched).
Peace is being lost [x2]
The country is in trouble
Comrades, light the lamp of zeal in your heart

a bad ending [x6]

Comrades, where is it (ever) long, the age of the criminals?
Comrades, in their paths, death always has stood
By doing injustice, there will be always only a result of of injustice
Anyone who doesn't speak the truth, will be a coward
What is irrigated with the blood the zealous ones have given,
comrades, save such garden from getting devastated!
Comrades, comrades, light the lamp of zeal in your heart!

Zindagi Maut Na Ban Jaye (Hindi: ज़िंदगी मौत न बन जाए, Urdu: زِندگی مَوت نہ بن جائے) "Let Life not Become Death" is a song from the 1999 Indian action drama "Sarfarosh"

The music of this song (as well as all the movie soundtrack) was composed by the duo Jatin–Lalit, and the lyrics were written by Israr Ansari. The singers are Sonu Nigam and Roop Kumar Rathod.
The song is played during the beginning and closing credits, no actor lip-syncs it.

The movie tells the story of Ajay (Aamir Khan), an Assistant Police Commissioner from Mumbai, who tries to stop a Pakistani-sponsored gang of criminals, and especially the shipments of arms being smuggled for them.

The movie was released at shortly before the Kargil Conflict between India and Pakistan, at a time where tension between the two countries was high. The song's lyrics are full of appeals to heroism and patriotism.

The word sar-farōś, which is also the title of the movie, is used repeatedly in the song.
This word, of Persian origin, literally means "head seller", meaning one who is willing to put his life on the line, to risk his head.
It is an adjective that can also be translated as "heroic, zealous, fervorous".

The word sar-farōśī is the abstract noun corresponding to sar-farōś, so it can be translated as "fervor", "heroism", "zeal".
It is also used in the song:
sar-farōśī kī śamā dil mēṁ jalā lō yārō light the flame of zeal in your heart, comrades!

Curiously, the English translation normally given to the movie title, "Sarfarosh", is "Fervour", which is wrong. "Fervor" would be sar-farōśī.

The lyrics appeal to defend one's country from danger. Several typical words and expressions are used to describe what is at risk:
  • dēś: the normal Hindustani word for "country"
  • watan: is an Arabic word meaning "country, homeland"
  • lahalhātē khēt: verdant/undulating fields
  • caman : garden (parterre)
  • gulśan: flower-garden
  • bastiyām̐: the populations, the settlements (with the nuance of being small, rural)
  • cain-ō-aman : "peace and calm" (as both words are similar in meaning, this izafat construction is normally translated as just "peace').
  • sar-farōśōṁ nē lahū dē kē jisē sīṁcā hai: what has been irrigated with the blood of the heroic ones
The movie was a commercial success and the song is remembered in India even today.

During the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, when strict house confinement measures were imposed, a video clip became viral of Pune policeman singing this song to encourage people to stay indoors.
