I am of his kind,

and he is similar to me

Oh, smiling,

And as he closes his eyes,

(it) is like in cool darkness.

I am of his kind,

Heer (Gurmukhi: ਹੀਰ, Shahmukhi: ہیر) is a song from the 2012 Indian drama "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" (For as Long as There is Life)
In the movie, a man and a woman living in London, Samar and Meera (Indian actors Shar Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif), fall in love but become tragically separated.

The video clip shows a party happening at the beginning of their relationship, during which Meera sings a Punjabi song, while Samar (who is a waiter and collects tips) lovingly encourages her.

The song's lyrics refer to two folkloric female characters, Heer and Sahiba (or Sahiban), heroines of two different and famous Punjabi tragic love stories: "Mirza Sahiba" and "Heer Ranjha". Although both stories end tragically, Sahiba's character is more assertive facing adversity adversity than Heer's. At some point in her story, she and Mizra elope from her unwanted wedding riding Mizra's famous mare, Bakki.
That is why the singer says that she doesn't want to be called Heer, but Sahiba.

The song was written by contemporary Indian poet Sampooran Singh Kalra, a.k.a. "Gulzar" and is sung by playback singer Harshdeep Kaur.
